Meet Our Founder

Dr. Hunja (MBChBAFMCP) is a Kenyan-trained medical doctor with advanced training through the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), based in Washington, D.C. She is on track to become the first African female medical doctor to earn full board certification from the IFM—an achievement that reflects not just clinical excellence, but long-overdue representation in the field of root-cause medicine.
This work, however, is not theoretical for her.
After walking through significant trauma that triggered autoimmune illness and hormonal collapse, it was the integrative, whole-person approach of Functional Medicine that helped her reclaim her health. She knows, firsthand, what it means to be dismissed, misdiagnosed, and told "everything looks fine" when everything clearly isn’t.
That lived experience is the heartbeat behind her practice.
She founded The Sophia Clinic to offer a new kind of care: trauma-informed, root-cause medicine that listens, looks deeper, and treats the whole person. Her clinical work focuses on women navigating hormonal imbalance, chronic illness, and the long-term effects of unresolved stress and trauma.
Dr. Hunja believes healing isn’t linear, quick, or formulaic.
It requires safety, structure, and compassion—especially for women whose symptoms have been ignored for too long.
At The Sophia Clinic, emotional pain and physical symptoms are never treated in isolation. Each woman is met with dignity and care that’s grounded in science, shaped by story, and delivered with depth.
