Dr. Angela Wambui Hunja, MD
Founder & Medical Director
The Sophia Clinic — Integrative Health

Dr. Hunja is a Kenyan-trained medical doctor with advanced training from the Institute for Functional Medicine in Washington, D.C. She is an IFM Founders' Scholarship recipient and is working toward becoming the first African woman to earn full board certification from the IFM, representing long-overdue leadership in root-cause medicine.
This work is personal.
After experiencing trauma that triggered autoimmune illness and hormonal collapse, it was functional medicine that helped her reclaim her health. She knows what it means to be dismissed, misdiagnosed, and told “everything looks fine” when everything clearly isn't.
That lived experience is the foundation of her practice.
She founded The Sophia Clinic to offer trauma-informed, root-cause medicine that listens, looks deeper, and treats the whole person. Her clinical work focuses on women navigating hormonal imbalance, chronic illness, and the long-term effects of unresolved stress and trauma.
Dr. Hunja believes healing requires safety, structure, and compassion, especially for those whose symptoms have been ignored for too long.
